WHO WE ARE
Flood is a faith-based organization whose Staff and Board are dedicated to reducing homelessness and transforming lives in Kern County. We work together to provide services that will result in ending unsheltered homelessness through the provision of street-outreach, housing navigation, case management and supportive services. Along with our county partners, we aspire to deliver whole person care that addresses the physical, emotional, and mental needs of the people we serve.
Flood was born out of a Small Group from The Bridge Bible Church. Given some funds for outreach in 2006, the Small Group decided to go out to the park, hold a worship service and offer some food to those in need, but what they really wanted to do was connect. They wanted to form a relationship and to show Jesus' love to those who are struggling. They fed and served a few people and decided to go back the next week. The same people showed up and when asked why they came back, they said because you know our names.
Serving in outreach for the next two years and wanting to do more to help homelessness the group became Flood Bakersfield Ministries in 2008 as a non profit organization. They realized the importance of building trust and relationships with those in homelessness and realized that they could help those in homelessness. Flood began providing outreach and supportive housing services and became an important part of the Kern County Homeless Collaborative.
Since 2011 Flood has been the primary provider of street outreach in Kern County. Through its street outreach efforts, Flood uniquely partners with Law Enforcement, City and County Code enforcement, local business and other homeless service providers to respond to unsheltered homelessness.
Flood has also grown to be a primary partner with the Housing Authority of the County of Kern to provide supportive services for their housing programs targeted to the chronically homeless.
Flood is a respected member of the Bakersfield-Kern Regional Homeless Collaborative and serves on the various committee, workgroups and advisory boards as well as both the Governing and Executive Boards.
Flood has grown from a handful of full and part-time staff to over 35 today.
VISION & MISSION
An end to long term homelessness in Kern County
We exist to help those in our community struggling in homelessness and to Flood them with the love of God. We reach out and engage them in their homelessness then
link them to appropriate resources and services,
navigate them through the supportive housing process, and
provide case management after they are housed.
We help people overcome their disadvantaged circumstances.
